3 Secrets to Breaking Through the Barriers of Fear

Pushing Past Fear to Pursue Your Unique Life

You can call it resistance, you can call it the enemy, you can call it a lot of things. You dream of pushing past fear. Fear wants nothing more than to smother the dream that you have. Fear wants to choke out the unique, singular story that God has wired into your life. Fear can only rob from life, it can never give life. This talk focuses on pursuing the life that God has designed just for you. We lay out a path for connecting with other kindred souls, who want healing and life change and want to see their dreams become reality as well.

Pushing Past Fear to Offer Your Best Work

How would you describe the moment where you knew that you were doing your best work? Work that satisfied your soul at the deepest level? When was a time that you pushed past fear, your expectations, the expectations of others, and offered work that came directly from your heart? This talk offers a proven path to identifying and embracing your best work in the profit and nonprofit sectors.

Pushing Past Fear by Flying Your Freak Flag

We all have dreams. But people around us often tell us to ‘be more realistic.’ When they give us this advice, what they usually mean is that we should buy into the same assumptions and prejudices… But atrophy of their own sensibilities has limited their thinking to a shrunken view of reality. Their world is the emotional size of a postage stamp. But yours need not be at all. You are a freak of nature. There is no one else in the world who has your unique combination of genetics, background, and personal experience. You are one of a kind. Make the most of this astonishing fact in your life and work.

Keep in mind that I can present these as a keynote or a breakout session.   I also have half-day seminars and in some cases, can offer the topics in a retreat format.

The Fun Stuff

I love being a speaker, pastor and spiritual director. Never in a million years did I imagine that I would get to do work that I love with people I love working with every.single.day.  I am the most fortunate man on the planet.

I worked as a janitor in college.  I am a genius with a floor buffer.

I married my soul mate.  No one was more surprised than I that I have a soul mate.  Some have questioned whether I have a soul.  I have banished them to the Forbidden Zone.

I can point to the exact geographical point in the road where I knew I would marry my wife Jody.  It’s a sweet story, and too long to go into here.

I can also point to the exact geographical point where I first heard the Ramones.  Don’t judge my priorities without walking a mile in my Chuck Taylors.

I’ve been incredibly good at three of my many jobs.  Being a speaker, being a pastor and being a bartender.  Draw your own conclusions.

Don’t talk to me about George Brett.

Rex Hackler and I started the trend of two-man bands – guitar and drums, like the White Stripes and the Black Keys.  I was the drummer who couldn’t play drums.  We called ourselves the Rex Pistols.

Wrestling is fake.  But when Chief Wahoo McDaniel, Mil Mascaras, and Bulldog Bob Brown wrestled, you best believe that it was real.

I love my oldest daughter more than life itself, even though as a toddler she smeared a Cheetos stain on my vintage G.I. Joe.

My middle daughter is artistic, sensitive and softhearted, three things that she could not have gotten from me.  I love that girl.

My son is the only one in my family who truly gets me.  He is eight.  Again, draw your own conclusions.

We live in Franklin TN.

Only Jesus would have bet that I would eventually follow Him.  He was a little surprised when I became a pastor.  That’s a joke for all of my Reformed buddies.  (Go Calvin!)

The ,er…, Credential-ly Stuff

I have been a public speaker since 1974 starting with an opportunity to speak to the local Daughters of the American Revolution as a fourth grader.  (In my Cub Scout uniform no less.  Impossibly cute.  My mom has pictures.)

In my twenty years of pastoral and non-profit work, I addressed over 2000 on weekends, in person and on video, and hundreds in classes and ministries during the rest of the week.  Keynotes, breakouts, workshops and retreats allowed me to expand my role as a communicator.

I am regularly sought out as a speaker on issues of relationship, full self-expression, team dynamics, and the integrated life. I am happy to tailor my presentations to meet your organization’s specific needs. My focus is to help you reach the goals that you have set.

I am honored that you are exploring this page.  Thank you for considering me.

Here’s what you can expect from me and my team:

  1. Prompt, professional replies to your phone calls and email messages.
  2. A phone consultation with me prior to your event, so I can better understand how I can best serve you and your audience.
  3. Sharing about your event on my blog and social media channels. (This assumes that your event is open to the public and you want more visibility for it.)
  4. A resource page, created for your attendees. It will include the slides I used in the presentation, along with links to books, articles, and other resources I believe will be helpful.
  5. A quick follow-up communication after the event, to make sure I met your expectations. (I also want to know how you think I can improve.)
